Imagined Lives in Art, Music and Poetry
The overriding reason for bringing these poems together is to show the close resemblance of spirit and inspiration among the creative artists who developed these three classical art forms. All of them begin with the world of reality and our existence in it. They then process these elements through their imagination in ways that are difficult, even impossible, to rationalise, and in doing so they re-create a parallel world which speaks back to our imagination. The legacies of these arts, built up over centuries, form one of the great glories of Western culture. Their shared achievement is to express mankind’s hidden feelings for the beauties and mysteries of our world and our experience of it. They take us, as they took their creators, into another, inner world of the soul and the emotions.
